History of Quest-Tech Precision Inc.

Begun as an electronics firm to be close to Nortel in Belleville, Montreal, and Ottawa, Quest-Tech has grown to be one of the premier metal fabricators in the Quinte area. The facility occupies approximately 80,000 square foot located on 5.75 acres of serviced industrial land in Belleville’s N.E. Industrial Park.

Products/Markets

Quest-Tech provides a complete range of fabrication and finishing services including shearing, punching, bending, welding, powder coating & wet painting, plating, silkscreening, assembly and custom packaging. They can create petrochemical towers out of 2 million pounds of sheet steel or coat hooks for a local school. However, their strengths lie mainly in custom sheet metal components and structural fabrication assemblies using various grades of carbon steels, stainless steels, and aluminums.

First article approval is completed using the Fabrivision Optical Scanning system. This system automatically compares first article inspection results to the original CAD drawings, using predefined tolerance settings to show the deviation (color coded) of a scan compared to a validated CAD file. Any deviations from the original drawings are quickly relayed to production and the equipment setup adjusted accordingly. Their ISO 9001:2008 Quality System defined inspection procedures can be tailored to meet specific custom standards or requests.

Quest-Tech is also holds Kiln Dried Heat Treated (KDHT) wood packaging certification from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. They run an in-house crating operation to ensure the myriad of component they produce are properly protected for shipping.

More than three-quarters of their employees have been with them for 15 years or more, and they have an extensive training program to transfer that invaluable knowledge to recent college and certificate graduates both inside and outside the company. For example, their ASME-registered welding procedures helped them to work with Loyalist College students in the Welding Program there.

Most of their products are ordered by companies in the U.S., but they routinely ship to the Gulf States, Russia, China, all over the world. Markets include the Petrochemical, Air Separation, Telecommunications and Transportation sectors. Related to their industrial customers, Quest-Tech would like to work more with the Quinte community to provide park benches, arch signage, waste bins, stainless steel counter tops, hooks, metal work, whatever the organizations in the community need.

History of Donini Chocolate

The Donini family arrived in Belleville more than 30 years ago with an old-world chocolate recipe and a vision. Today, they are a thriving company of 40 employees producing high-quality specialty chocolate.

In all started in Vigevano, Italy, 60 years ago and they continue this European tradition of excellence at their North American plant in Belleville.

Products/Markets

Donini specializes in dark chocolate (produced by adding cocoa butter and sugar to cacao), milk chocolate (dark chocolate made with milk), white chocolate (milk chocolate without the cacao solids), and couverture, the highest quality chocolates rich in cocoa butter. They make blocks of all-purpose and no-sugar-added chocolate, bits, buttons, stick, wafers, truffle shells, and a special chocolate for shaving made to stand up to a sharp blade and roll off in curls, all in dark, milk, and white chocolate. They also send tanker trucks of liquid chocolate to Toronto and Quebec with tanks heated to 40°C.

They’ve never been asked to make a life-sized statue of Apollo out of chocolate, preferring to leave such orders to specialty moulders. They also don’t compete with the makers of mass-produced chocolate such as Cadbury’s and Hershey’s. Donini’s chocolate maker, Vigilio, uses European recipes similar to Belgian or Swiss chocolate.

As a small company, Donini focuses on quality, innovation and distribution. Donini small size allows it to bring new products from the conception stage to market faster and to be flexible to adapt to the changing needs of its customers. Recently Donini has also been targeting increasing its presence in retail grocery stores.

Another successful innovation is producing chocolate products that complement wine.

Not only is the taste divine but the flavanols found in chocolate are similar to the antioxidants found in green teas, berries and red wine. The key is the right chocolate with the right wine. Generally, dark chocolate pairs with red wine and lighter chocolate containing fruit such as cranberries pairs with white wine. This has proven to be so successful in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Prince Edward County and Pelee Island that Donini has appointments in the Sonoma Valley, California, to
discuss an expansion of the product there.
